So Jae-kyung, the lead guy, is from a rich family and is the only heir to their wealth since his parents died from an accident. He is actually a bully and has a very bad attitude since he knows he can get away from anything with money. His grandfather's will was for him to learn a lesson in life or else he will lose all his wealth. The deal was that he will need to transfer school in Gangwon province and he must graduate or else, he will not be inheriting anything or he can choose to give up and he will inherit 0.1% of his grandfather's wealth.
He then goes to the new town with only a limited amount of money and lives in a house managed by the owner of an orphanage. He meets a girl named Eun-whan whom he met earlier in his family's hotel thinking she was a hooker trying to extort money from him. He finds out soon that Eun-whan is also his schoolmate and she also works at the gas station and the orphanage.
During his stay, he learns that the people there live a very simple life that just a small amount of money can actually make them very happy and that people were so nice and honest that he compared them to angels. He also gets numerous encounters with Eun-whan where she teaches him lessons in life and of course you know what happens, they eventually liked each other.
Dad: Why do you still dye your nails with flower juice? |
Soon enough, Jae-kyung finds out that Eun-whan has a terminal illness wherein her heart is so weak that either too much happiness or sadness can kill her and that she will soon die. Jae-kyung tries his best to make her happy every day. A korean tradition of dyeing nails with flower juice was also shown through Eun-whan. Koreans believe that if you dye your nails with flower juice and the stain remains until the first snow, you will eventually meet your true love. Jae-kyung actually asked Eun-whan to help him dye his nails as well believing that it will help him be with Eun-whan longer.
Eun-whan goes back to the first seen where she meets a woman. She reveals to the woman that she was the child whom she left at the orphanage and also tells her about her illness.
Back to the school, during the practice of the school play where they will be performing The Sound of Music where Jae-kyung will be playing as the maid and Eun-whan as Maria, Jae-kyung saw kids practicing some dialogs and it reminded him of him and a young girl whom he promised that he will return in ten days. Unfortunately that promise was never fulfilled because Jae-kyung's parents died and he was so hurt that he erased all the memories of his childhood and the girl who was actually Eun-whan was also forgotten.
First kiss under the rain. |
Jae-kyung looks for Eun-whan and apologized and tells her he loves her very much. Jae-kyung also asks Eun-whan to stop working since she has a very weak body but Eun-whan reveals to him that she is saving money to build an orphanage because the orphanage where they are currently living at is ilegally built on a land that is owned by Jae-kyung's grandfather. Hearing this, Jae-kyung calls their family lawyer and tells him that he is willing to give up his inheritance so he can get the 0.1% and pay for the orphanage's land.
Winter comes and the school performed The Sound of Music. Eun-whan's mother was at the audience watching her. Jae-kyung switched place to play the Colonel instead of the maid so he can perform in the lead with Eun-whan. As Eun-whan performed, she had to stop due to exhaustion but continued until the performance was over.
Eun-whan promises to only sleep for three minutes on Jae-kyungs shoulder during the first snow. |
Review:
Walking on a field of dandelions. |
It's a typical story of a rich guy with a bad attitude and a poor girl with a terminal illness who fall in love with each other. It actually reminds me of Mandy Moore's A Walk to Remember.
Though it's as typical as an Asian eating rice, the movie made me cry a lot. The actors did good in terms of acting and I like the fact that like any other Korean romantic dramas, they feature the picturesque landscapes of Korea. It makes me want to live there (but maybe just for a while and not forever. ^_^) ! They also feature some Korean culture like the dyeing of nails with flower juice.
Some of the movie's dramatic scenes are paired with very nice music and I think they did a good job in choosing the right weather condition for some of the scenes like the rain during their first kiss etc.
The aim of the movie is also simple, it wants to tell the viewers that money cannot buy you everything especially true love but love can teach you more than what money can.
If you want a simple romantic drama this is a good pick.
