十八:Movie Summary and Review of Koizora

Warning: My summary is very long because the movie has so many twists. If you don't want to read it, go directly to my review at the bottom.

The sweet, innocent, Mika.

So the lead character, Mika, meets this delinquent guy in their school named Hiro by losing her cellphone. After finding her cellphone in the library, Hiro calls her without revealing whom he was. He calls her so often that Mika developed an interest in meeting him in person. I will simply call what Hiro did here as stalking.

Hiro agrees to meet with Mika at the school's swimming pool before their commencement excercise during their freshman year. Mika arrives at the pool and sees what she calls a silver haired demon. Hiro then proves to Mika that he's the guy that she was talking to on the phone by showing her a picture of the sky with a plane trail which they both took one morning after their chat. Mika was of course shocked but eventually likes Hiro's carefree personality.

Hiro the silver gray haired demon.

So they fall in love and Hiro takes Mika's virginity but makes a huge mistake of saying his ex's name, Saki, while he was asleep with Mika. As the innocent and very forgiving girl that she is, Mika did not let it bother her though she was deeply hurt.

One day while waiting for Hiro fir their date, Mika was raped by a group of boys whom Hiro found out later were hired by his ex girlfriend Saki. Hiro brings Saki to Mika and tells her that he is willing to kill his ex if she asks him to. Mika forgives Saki but Hiro's elder sister, Minako cuts Saki's hair real short as her punishment for the girl. Mika's family found out about the incident and had her checked and forunately she was okay and was not pregnant.

The lovers move on but Saki did not stop in hurting Mika by sending her text messages telling her to break up with Hiro and spreading rumors that Mika is a promiscuous girl. Hiro promises to Mika that he will protect her no matter what.

The lovers move on and soon enough Hiro impregnates Mika.  Hiro dyed his hair brown and presents himself to Mika's parents. He promises to them that he will work to support Mika and their baby. Hiro presented Mika as well to his family and gives them his promise.

One day, Saki went to Mika's school and confronted her. As Mika tries to leave after talking to Saki, Saki pushed her making her fall to the ground and hurting her but Mika did not fight back.

As they were celebrating a festival, Mika suddenly felt severe pain and after bringing her to the hospital, she was told that she no longer has the baby in her tummy anymore. She reveals the bad news to Hiro who just came back from the temple to pray for the baby's safety after hearing that the baby was in danger. They both cry and soon places a snowman at an empty lawn with the pair of mittens that Hiro bought for the baby.

A few days have passed and Hiro suddenly does not go to school anymore. Mika was worried and tries to contact him until one day, Hiro invites some friends over to his house without Mika knowing. Aya, Mika's friend asked her to come. Hiro was having a party because his family was away. During the night, as all guests were drunk, Nozomu, Aya's boyfriend tried to kiss Mika. Mika hurriedly ran to the bathroom and washed her face and when she came back, saw Hiro kissing another girl. Mika runs away and Hiro is shown watching at Mika from the his house.

Mika again asks Hiro to make up and waits for him at his favorite place which is the river. Mika actually compares Hiro to the river because for her, Hiro's flow or waves can actually wash away her loneliness and he is as carefree as the river bu Hiro believes he is the sky because he wants to be able to see wherever Mika is to protect her. Hiro shows up but he tells her that he does not love her anymore and he throws his ring, which they bought as a couple, towards Mika. One of the couple rings was actually still with Hiro because Mika threw it at him when he asked her to break up with him earlier.

Mika soon moves on and meets a new guy through Aya. This time the guy, Yuu, is the very opposite of Hiro. He was gentle, mature, has a decent job, studies at a university and is respectful at Mika's every decision.

Yuu learned about Mika's baby and Hiro but accepts it maturely as he loves Mika very much. Every Christmas Eve, Yuu would drive Mika at the place where her baby lays. She never fails to provide a new pair of mittens with the size as if the baby was actually living and growing. Hiro never showed up and Mika thinks Hiro never cared until one day he did show up wearing a bonnet. He tells her it's his new style and runs away from Mika.

Mika continues her relationship with Yuu. Yuu proposes to be engaged with Mika which she accepts until Nozomu reveals to her during her visit at her baby's grave that Hiro is already dying from cancer. Mika was devastated and breaks up with Yuu. Yuu, as mature as ever, lets Mika go believing that he should not let his loved one suffer from being away with what she truly loves.

Mika finds Hiro at the hospital and started to take care of him. She would always prepare his food and made him a bonnet to cover his head because he lost his hair due to the treatment. Hiro on the other hand takes pictures of Mika without her knowing.

One day they go to the Hiro's favorite place, the river and they make this pretend wedding vow. Hiro tells Mika that he is scared to die.

At the hospital, Mika meets Saki who is now pregnant. Saki asks her if she was sick but Mika tells her that she is visiting another patient. Saki then tells Mika to hit her so she can have her vengeance but Mika nicely refused but requested if she can touch her belly. Saki lets Mika touch her belly and Mika talks asking the baby to be a healthy one once born. Mika returns to Hiro's room. Hiro tells Mika that she would like to become the sky so he can always see her. Mika tells him that if Hiro is the sky then the morning sky is the happy Hiro, the rainy sky is the crying Hiro, the sunset is the blushing Hiro and the night is Hiro hugging Mika as she sleeps. Hiro then tells Mika that he would give her the stars if he was the sky and takes a picture of it using his digital camera. Hiro hands the camera to Mika and asks her to have the pictures printed.

As Mika is about to go back to the hospital, Minako calls her and tells her that Hiro is in code blue. Mika runs and at the same time tries to wake Hiro through a video call. Mika trips and the photographs are revealed to be almost all pictures of her. She tries to call Hiro again and Hiro opens his eyes. Mika tells her not to be selfish by taking of her pictures only but hey should be taking their pictures together. Hiro tries his best to talk and asks Mika to smile. As she cries and run at the same time, Mika tried her best to smile for Hiro and she tells him to wait for her and the call ends.

Hiro died leaving his diary to Mika. Mika was so sad she tried to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge of Hiro's favorite river. As she was about to jump holding Hiro's diary, two doves fly surprising her and making her let go of the diary revealing Hiro's messages for her. It writes stuff about how he wants Mika to stay strong and happy and how he loves her so much. Mika looks at the sky and cries.

At the last part, Mika is shown in a train holding two pairs of mittens which viewers can easily tell as Hiro's and their baby's mittens. She alights from the train and meets with her family waiting for her at the station.

Review:

Based on my research, this Japanese movie was based on a cellphone novel. It was so popular that it was turned into a movie, manga and drama series. The meaning of the title is literally Sky of Love.

It's a romantic movie where good innocent girl falls in love with a bad boy. Through the course of their relationship they encounter a lot of challenges and I mean a lot! Even the word challenge for me is an understatement of what they went through.

I find the challenges too hard for teenagers to be easily accepted especially for the lead character Mika. Mika is represented as very kind, innocent, sweet and I don't think such girl can bear all those suffering. I actually have a girl friend who was also very very sweet, kind, you know the fragile type, and she fell in love with this bad boy who kept on hurting her feelings until she cannot bear it anymore, she became so depressed and had to seek the help of a psychiatrist. Until now, my friend has never been able to move on. Her very cute and innocent face... abused and wasted.

At the first part of the movie I was like, "who would actually fall in love with such delinquent boy?" but then I realized, actually a lot of nice girls would fall for that.. poor girls (I actually think I was once a victim too. O_o) . If you think about it, a very aggressive boy, somewhat good looking, very sexually active and a girls who's sweet, naive, weak... opposites do attract... sigh...

Anyway, so most of the movie's story can actually happen in real life, if it was true and it happened to me, I think I might have commited suicide as well or I would not actually let myself get hurt that much that my story will only reach half of the movie and the rest will be different.

It would be realistic I think if the girl was shown as a stronger one emotionally speaking though maybe the author thought that the weaker she is, the more sympathy she will get from the viewers. If you try to put yourself in Mika's shoes then you'll probably cry a lot as you watch the movie.

It's one of those movies that most people will  be able to relate to because of its highschool setting and will remind you of your first love or crushes in high school. I think it also wants to say that your first love will always have a space in your heart no matter how much you were hurt.
